AMA Supermoto Final 2004.

With a top level (read world class) field Darryl Atkins managed 9th in the Unlimited final AMA Supermoto Championship race in Las Vegas yesterday (November 14).

Atkins finished a creditable 6th in the championship, which awarded double points for the final round of the 7 round series.

Winner of the championship was Ben Townley's boss Kurt Nicol who was quoted as saying “It’s only taken forty years to win a championship. Just wait till I’m older and have some more experience!" Nicol came second in the world 500cc motocross chamopionship close on twenty years ago.

Does Atkins campaign rate him as New Zealand's top Supermoto rider?

Darryl's report.

Hi Everyone,

Las Vegas was the final round for the AMA Supermoto Championship at the
Paris Hotel located on the Las Vegas Strip. I did spend allot of time
building up to Las Vegas training on my bike with my friend Ben Bostrom,
winner of the Supermoto Championship last year and X-Games in August. We
did
burn up allot of tires riding everyday for two weeks.

The Track in Vegas had a great dirt section build by Mark Peters, the
only
section I did not like all weekend was the rear road section after we
went
off the dirt, the asphalt was coming off and it was like riding on Ice.
A
lot of the Worlds best Supermoto races came in from Europe including
World
Champion Eddy Seel, this is how it went for me.

TIME TRAINING - 10TH

HEAT RACE - 5TH

FINAL - 9TH

OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIP POSITION - 6TH

COMMENTS:
It was a tuff weekend for me, I could not ride a section of the track
fast
and it really cost me, I went to Vegas to try to move up to 6th in the
Championship and even though my result was not what I wanted for the
day, I
was really happy to finish my first year of racing Supermoto inside the
top
ten, 6th.
