Paul Brown is NZ's first National Supermoto Champion!

National Supermoto Champion 2005-Paul Brown (Husaberg)

For a championship that started out on the 27th of March with little in the way of structure, New Zealand's first Supermoto national title was a glowing success.

The championship had the star appearances, Aaron Slight making a return to tarmac type competition and Irishman Greg Kinsella showing the finess of a Supermoto master.

There was drama for some of the main contenders, Briggs DNFing race one of the championship and Kinsella falling at that first round before taking the championship lead and then leaving before the final.

The drama element saw Stockmen class leader Kyle Smith winning every race in round one then sustaining a work injury and being forced to miss round two. Dave Atchison went on to win the class on the little Yamaha YZ250F.

There was also some great performances from riders such as Blake Gillard on the stock KTM 525 and Brendon Coad (KTM525SMR), Brendon Stephenson and Ian Atkins. Promoter Nigel Bevin also managed some fine rides.

After 11 races from three rounds there was only room for one (S1) national champion however. The single race win posted by each of the top three finishers showed that Brown never really had it all his own way. He had to work hard through the whole series to take the honours.

Over eight races in the first two rounds of the championship, only three individuals managed to secure wins. None of these three managed wins in the final three races of the championship.First Brendon Stephenson, then round three's overall winner Aaron Slight and lastly impressive young motocrosser Blake Gillard grabbed the last wins of the series.

The Stockmen and Quad classes were won by Dave Atchison and Michael Higgie respectively.

Due to technical difficulties full results for all classes will not be posted until later in the week.
