Atkins bridesmaid again

The Kiwi Kid keeps smiling

Darryl Atkins, in what can only be described as (another) piece of bad luck, has again missed out on taking the United States of America's AMA Open Supermoto National Title.

The former motocrosser was leading the championship by five points going into the finial, double header, championship round. While in the lead of the weekends first race Atkins sustained a puncture. Despite his team achieving a double-quick tyre change and the fact he won the second race comfortably, Atkins lost the title to Steve Drew by one point.

This is of course, all the more painful for the Kiwi Kid, as he was one corner away from taking the title back in 2005. Mickey Dymond took the title that year after a forceful move knocked Atkins out of the lead on the final race of the final corner.

Atkins, who runs the Factory Aprilia Supermoto team, had earlier suggested that he wouldn't contest next year's championship as a rider. Deciding to instead concentrate on managing his team and his exporting businesses.
