'Supermoto
5'
It was deja
vu for KTM's Blake Gillard. As he had at the Supermoto
nationals, Gillard was to leave a major Supermoto meeting,
as the fastest man of the day, winning the days final
race but without that first illusive class title. The
days top prize, indeed prizes went
to expat Brit, Toby Summers.
The Scott Wilkins inspired
Champion Dragway course, took it's final form only the
day before. With help from SMNZ (thats us), the Champion
Dragway team, Stephen Briggs and Toby Summers the course
layout became a great combination of tarmac ,
speedway, gravel and even a little grass. The initial layout
which had had considerable grass sections, was enhanced
when the Champion Dragway team relented and allowed the
dropping
of a fence. This paved the way for the events final configuration
and New Zealand Supermoto had it's newest Supermoto circuit.
The morning kicked off under a blustery drizzle.
Riders briefing concluded with a deluge but the sky hinted
at a possible break as the Quad boys whipped out and pumped
a dryish line.Paul Salle grabbing the top spot from Mark
and Ross Keily respectively.
Next up were the SM classes (all 17inch wheel
bikes together). With the track drying throughout the
session, riders times improved dramatically lap apon lap.
Summers
took pole position.for the SM1 class from Younger,
who then transfered to the SM Open class. Second qualifer
in SM1
then was former BikeMart Supermoto champion Nigel Healey
(2003), followed by Cloud Craig-Smith and Gillard.
National
Supermoto Champion Paul Brown headed the SM Open timesheet
with Pete
Byers narrowily holding out motocrosser Daniel Marshal
for second and Stephen Briggs grabbing fourth spot on the
grid.
The last practice/qualifers of the morning
were the Sportsmen classes, again all out together. The Sportsmen
class session was stopped after 1 lap when a rider fell on
the speedway course but after a brief break they finished
their session.Scott Bregman ended up top qualifer with Mr
Motorcycles Craig Brown second , and Northern Accessories
Steven Croad third in the Sportsmen Open class. Dave Aitchison
smoked the rest of the Sportsmen light field to be top qualifer
by some six seconds!
SM1 Premier
(450cc) Class.
Yamaha mounted Toby Summers used his intimate
knowledge of the 1.8km course to win all three races. Blake
Gillard was always on Summers rear fender and pushed extrmely
hard in the days final race but the Papakura man held fast.
The leading pair drew away from the field early on and it
was Suzuki rider Sam Smith who followed them home each time.
The SM1 (450) boys were the fastest solos of the day.
A few race photos.

SM Open Class
National Supermoto champion Paul Brown grabbed an early
lead in race one and then held it to the flag from 2004 BikeMart
Supermoto champion Stephen Briggs. The pair pulling away
from a busy Daniel Marshal (Dave Leary Racing KX500).
Race
two saw KTM525 mounted (thanks to Trevor Bell) Kendrick Younger
join the lead pair for a three way push to the flag. Briggs
this time taking the line honours from Brown, Younger and
Marshal some way back in fourth.
Marshal turned the tables for the days final
SM Open race. The motocrosser performed brilliantly on the
powerful KX500. This time the top four were stretched out
as the riders tired from the effort of throwing the large
bikes about.Younger
being followed home
by Briggs
and
Brown.
Briggs taking the overall and impressive
performances shown by all the top men.
